things, please pass along information to us. bill bratton in our london bureau tonight. pete williams, our justice correspondent, continues to make calls and report this story out from our washington bureau. pete, what do you have? >> reporter: well, i was struck by what the police commissioner said about urging people to stay home. the fact that there seemed to be at least as far as his information goes two separate incidents and two separate places in boston. one at the scene of the marathon, the other at the jfk library. and we also have seen a number of local communities raise their sort of alert level, putting more people on the street. and i'm assured, though, by a couple of federal officials that i've talked to that they're not -- this is not happening because of some additional information that something else is going on that we don't know about. that these -- that the department of homeland security, for example, an official there tells me it has not put out any kind of an advisory urging local communities to be on a higher level of alert. that what we're seeing around town o
, pete williams, has been working this story all day. pete, what can you tell us tonight? >> reporter: brian, tonight authorities confirm there were two bombs, we know that much, but it's unclear how many others were planted. there were other suspicious packages. the word of another bomb elsewhere placed at the jfk library is apparently turning out not to be true. at least five other packages have been found on the street, have been deemed suspicious and are being destroyed, but this is no firm confirmation of whether they were actually explosive devices, although some officials tonight say there is reason to think that some of them were. we're told, by the way, that one of the two victims that was killed in the explosion was 8 years old. boston police say there was no specific intelligence warning of any kind of attack, and federal officials tonight say there is no reason to think that this is part of any larger threat. at this point they believe it is confined to boston, but a meeting tonight will decide whether any kind of national alert will be sent out. there is no suspect in cus
this hour with nbc justice correspondent pete williams and former cia counterterrorism director larry johnson. two best guests we could have. pete, let's go back to that picture we just saw from whdh up there, boston affiliate of nbc. what are the experts making of the fact that it was there, that bag, whatever it is sitting there before the explosion and then in this picture taken afterwards you can see the smoke trailing up to the left there diagona diagonally? what does that tell us? >> it tells us it's something they're investigating, chris. they know, they believe very strongly that the bombs were brought to the scene in backpacks. but i think it's fair to say they're looking at whether after they got there, they put them in these shopping bags. now, that thing next to the -- to the bag that's just on the edge of the little spot shot circle there, that is a trash receptacle. could it be? it's a question. could it be the devices were placed in these trash bags next to trash receptacles to look inconspicuous? it's something that they're -- that they're studying and something that i

this hallway blocked off. pete williams is reporting that federal officials say they believe they know who sent the letters to st senate and the white house but no arrest has been made yet. they're waiting for test results. >> we're going to hear from jay carney sometimes in the past few minutes about either boston or developments in washington or both. just as someone who reports to the area every day, can you give us an idea of how different security looked? >> it doesn't have the mi militarized feel. yesterday we had a parade that didn't appear that different at all. today coming up here to capitol hill all of the trash cans in the parks have been taking off their bases and knocked over on their sides. clearly they're going to go around and collect those and provide one less place for somebody to hide a gis and staffers are feeling jittery. we have a couple of these incidents. you can imagine people are on heightened alert. a lot of peoplery saying it feels reminiscent of the post 9/11 era. >> don't go too far. they think they may know who sent at least some of these letters. can you add any
